Irish Politics, Current Affairs and Magazine Archive - Politico.ie | The law parades its privilege in lavish new home: At the committee hearings the chief executive of the Courts Service, Brendan Ryan, said the construction and fit out costs were €149m, including Vat. He added that there would also be a ‘‘€21.4m unitary charge for 25 years’’ ,which amounts to €535m.
Anyway, this ‘‘statement building’’ either did cost or will cost a very large amount of money - and the question I want to ask is: who decided that such a large amount of public monies should be spent on this PPP venture rather than, say, on the regeneration of St Michael’s estate in Inchicore, which is only a few stones’ throws away?
According to the St Michael’s website, the project was to provide for the physical and social regeneration of the estate, involving 720 dwellings (165 social, 75 affordable, 480 private). It would also have included a civic centre with a library, a parish centre, three creches, a youth centre, a family resource centre, a healthcare centre, two football pitches, play areas, a new urban square, a village green and a public square.
This was all abandoned in 2008, while the new Criminal Courts of Justice statement building was under construction.
How could it be that a courts building, an upgrade of existing facilities, got priority at such enormous cost, ahead of housing for thousands of people in a disadvantaged area?ANSWER MAY BE FOUND ON"PUBLIC INQUIRY"CORRUPTION IN IRELAND?

Designed to Fail: Why Regulatory Agencies Don’t Work | FAIR: “Fill the regulatory agencies with honest people who won’t cave in to special interests.” “Give them more money, more authority and more people.” But my experience has shown that by concentrating all legislative, executive and judiciary authority in one regulatory agency just makes it easier for it to be corrupted by the industries it regulates?NAMA?

Brian Trevaskis - Late Late Show - Peoples Republic Of Cork Discussion Forums
Brian Trevaskis - Late Late Show - Peoples Republic Of Cork Discussion Forums: Brian Trevaskis: Not long after the show began in the 1960s there was a particular debate on the programme about the Roman Catholic Church. Brian Trevaskis, a young student, criticised the Bishop of Galway for "Not Helping The Underprivileged", who instead built a large new cathedral which Trevaskis described as a "monstrosity." Travaskis also criticised the Bishop's Christian views. The insults proved too much and the student was brought back on the programme the following week to make an apology. On the second show Trevaskis went further referring to the Bishop as a "moron." The controversy which surrounded the statement proved too much and Trevaskis subsequently committed suicide.

Scoilnet - Look at History through the RTE Archives: He voiced his concern for the future of the nation, especially in Europe; he argued that the talent of young Irish people was not being used to full potential; and he wondered if we could go on devoting so much money and effort to the building of churches to the neglect of social issues.?
Justice and The Poor
Justice and The Poor: Another troubling finding of the 1995 report was that thousands of low-income Canadians are imprisoned routinely because they are unable to pay fines. Also disturbing were indications that many poor young people who cannot get legal representation for minor offences end up with criminal records that bar them from jobs and thus condemn them to a lifetime of poverty. When we examined these issues further, we found that the different stages of the criminal justice process are so closely interconnected that their effects cannot be separated. We therefore extended our analysis to three main stages: relations with the police, bail decisions and sentencing.?
There are two criminal justice systems in the United States. One is for people with wealth, fame or influence who can afford to hire top-notch attorneys and public relations firms, who make campaign contributions to sheriffs, legislators and other elected officials, and who enjoy certain privileges due to their celebrity status or the size of their bank accounts. The other justice system is for everybody else.?SAME HERE IN IRELAND?
