Being considered innocent is something our justice system touts and what we present as a standard to the rest of the world.. Our justice system is not to be discretionary and all people are to have a fair opportunity to defend themselves in a fair court of law. Unfortunately, that is not always the case and was never the case with Paul Cortez., Justice costs an obscene amount of money and Paul Cortez could not pay the fee. Fortunately for DSK, he had the resources to be represented by incredibly competent and connected lawyers and had many powerful people demanding justice. We saw a similar situation when the Duke players were falsely accused of rape. The outcome for those players would probably have been differen t had those young men not had the resources and the backing of a prestigious community. There are many examples of being "tried by the media" and convicted in "the court of public opinion:?

Dáil Éireann - Volume 572 - 15 October, 2003 - Ceisteanna – Questions (Resumed). Priority Questions. - Departmental Properties.: Sustained and repeated efforts were made to address the concerns of local residents in the areas where the properties and the site are located. Local interests in Macroom and in Donnybrook have exercised their right to challenge the use of the properties in the courts on planning grounds. The State is defending the planning permission in respect of these two properties and the matter awaits determination by the High Court. The development of the leased site in County Kilkenny has also been halted pending the outcome of judicial review proceedings on planning matters relating to it. It would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this time in such circumstances, as I do not want to compromise current High Court litigation. I can say, however, that the RIA acted at all times in accordance with the legal advice of the Attorney General in respect of planning matters relating to these and all other properties.?

Over the same period, the RIA has entered into commercial contracts for service arrangements with the owners of more than 100 properties for the same purpose. All of the facilities, with the exception of four properties and one leased site, have been or are currently in use to accommodate asylum seekers. Approximately 31,000 asylum seekers have been accommodated to date and related services have been provided for them by the RIA.
