Elaine Byrne: Male, over 50, overpaid -- Official Ireland still rules - Analysis, Opinion - Independent.ie: Official Ireland ostracised heroes like the social worker Frank Crummey, who confronted the abuse of children head on. Joe McAnthony, the Sunday Independent investigative journalist who first uncovered payments to politicians back in 1973, also suffered. A troublemaker whose persistence was rewarded with emigration.
"My life was pretty much over as a journalist. Everything I worked on was closed down," Joe said in an interview some years ago. "Nobody would hire me. I had four children. So we had to go. I was essentially expelled from Ireland."
That's what Official Ireland has done to individuals who have tried to speak the truth. To avoid rather than confront. The refusal to recognise the fundamental difference between right and wrong which poisons public life. Excuses are made for erroneous behaviour, often to protect a reputation.?

Leo Varadkar » Speech by Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar at the MacGill Summer School, Thursday 26th July: Indeed, in the days of the Greek city states, the first republics, it was decreed a crime for any citizen to shrink from controversy and fail to speak his mind. Quinn's jail privileges show touch of class - The Irish Times - Tue, Jul 24, 2012#.UA34e30yFhw.facebook#.UA34e30yFhw.facebook: But because Quinn is there, someone else isn’t. Statistically, that anonymous someone is probably badly educated, from a poor urban background and caught up in drugs. The unit houses just 117 inmates – a tiny fraction of the 4,000-plus male prison population. Almost every one of those 4,000 men wants to be where Quinn is, and many of them are on the waiting list to get in. But they’re from the wrong class and they committed the wrong sort of offence. Journalist Chris Hedges on Capitalism's "Sacrifice Zones": Communities Destroyed for Profit: There are forgotten corners of this country where Americans are trapped in endless cycles of poverty, powerlessness, and despair as a direct result of capitalistic greed. Journalist Chris Hedges calls these places "sacrifice zones," and joins Bill this week on Moyers & Company to explore how areas like Camden, New Jersey; Immokalee, Florida; and parts of West Virginia suffer while the corporations that plundered them thrive.
These are areas that have been destroyed for quarterly profit. We're talking about environmentally destroyed, communities destroyed, human beings destroyed, families destroyed," Hedges tells Bill.?

The LIBOR scandal: The rotten heart of finance | The Economist

The LIBOR scandal: The rotten heart of finance | The Economist: Over the past week damning evidence has emerged, in documents detailing a settlement between Barclays and regulators in America and Britain, that employees at the bank and at several other unnamed banks tried to rig the number time and again over a period of at least five years. And worse is likely to emerge. Investigations by regulators in several countries, including Canada, America, Japan, the EU, Switzerland and Britain, are looking into allegations that LIBOR and similar rates were rigged by large numbers of banks.?

Central Bank Governor Patrick Honohan's report on the banking crisis pointed to "major failure" of bank regulation as one of its key causes.
Horan was appointed special adviser to incoming Financial Regulator Matthew Elderfield in 2009. He would also be deputy chairman of the Central Bank's Supervisory Risk Committee.

Constitutional Convention Debate on Tonight With Vincent Browne on TV3 (posted by Matt Wall) « politicalreform.ie: Really interesting debate on the government’s plans to "involve citizens" in Irish constitutional reform with contributions from: this site’s Elaine Byrne, Conor O’Mahony, a constitutional law expert from UCC, and Oliver Moran from the Second Republic civil society group. Labour’s Alex White gamely defending the government’s performance and plans to date – though he was batting on a sticky wicket on many specific points. James Connolly Education Trust

James Connolly Education Trust: We in this country remember April 1916 as a time of no mean significance; indeed the first few months of this year have been consumed with debates over the legacy of the 1916 Easter Rising and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. While it is understandable, given that this is the ninetieth anniversary of the Rising, that we should be consumed with our own parochial history, it is also worth remembering that April 1916 witnessed the publication of another significant document, indeed arguably one of far greater significance in the grand scheme of things. Published in the aftermath of the implosion of the Second International and in the midst of the bloody carnage of the First Imperialist World War, Rosa Luxemburg’s “Junius” pamphlet confronted its readers with the stark choice, for want of a better term, between socialism and the advancement of the human race, or "barbarism" and the steady slide into oblivion.?
