NAMA loses appeal over requests for environmental information | Irish Examiner: "The High Court has today dismissed an appeal by the National Assets Management Agency against a ruling by the Commissioner for Environmental Information it is a public authority and therefore subject to freedom of information requests.

The Commissioner, Emily O'Reilly, ruled in September 2011 NAMA should be subject to information requests under environmental freedom of information on the basis of her finding it is a public authority within the meaning of provisions of the 2007 European (Access to Information on the Environment) Regulations.

NAMA appealed that decision to the High Court, and had argued claimed the Commissioner's decision was wrong and argued its establishment under statute does not mean it is a public authority. "?

Editorial July-August 2012 Why no prosecutions? | Village Magazine

Editorial July-August 2012 Why no prosecutions? | Village Magazine: "The law on corporate crime and corruption is no longer really the problem. The problem is not the rules, it is their enforcement.

Nothing enshrines inequality in our society so well as inertia in prosecuting white-collar crime.  As a first part of a continuing series we look [pp24-29] at why bankers and people fingered by our zealous, if over-priced, tribunals have remained with one or two exceptions free, the beneficiaries – apparently and so far – of impunity."?

Beppe Grillo's Blog: "The reconstruction of Italy can now begin on the basis of social justice, of equity, of community, and of solidarity. The Italian has lost the idea of beauty, of happiness, even the awareness of self, of self worth and of personal identity. We can succeed in coming out of the darkness, of seeing the stars once more. It won’t be the spread that stops us if each person plays their part, if we get involved fearlessly. We are the State and they have convinced us otherwise."?

Column: Industrial action by gardaí is unacceptable – and here’s why: "The Garda Representative Organisation was formed in the wake of the “Macushla Revolt” in November 1961, when many gardaí started to meet and organise in protest of their poor pay and conditions. Decisions, Decisions – The Story

Decisions, Decisions – The Story: "When I began looking at how Freedom of Information works in Ireland, one of the first things I did was look for decision notices. To my astonishment, there were very few: the Irish Information Commissioner publishes only a selection of decisions. With fewer appeals because of the high fees, the result is a much smaller base of information to draw on. The Scottish Commissioner has published 1,568 decisions in just over eight years; in Ireland, after fifteen years, we have just 435."?
